Seeking to encourage South Florida’s low-income and minority students
to enroll in college-level mathematics, science and engineering
programs, a non-profit foundation recently gave $15,000 to a black
elected officials group to create scholarships.
FORT LAUDERDALE — In an effort to reconnect the black community with
the once-favored sport of baseball, state Rep. Perry Thurston is
hosting the first annual Thurston AAA Invitational Baseball Tournament this weekend at Joseph C. Carter Park in Fort Lauderdale.
In a conference call with statewide and national press, U.S. Rep.
Kendrick Meek’s campaign reported that he has raised $1,491,000 for the
first quarter of 2009. The final tally won’t be posted until
mid-month, and that total is expected to increase when contributions
made by the deadline are included.
