MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) — Scientists are reporting advances in detecting and predicting Alzheimer's disease at a conference in Honolulu this week, plus offering more proof that getting enough exercise and vitamin D may lower your risk.

There are better brain scans to spot Alzheimer's disease. More genes that affect risk. Blood and spinal fluid tests that may help tell who will develop the mind-robbing illness and when.

walter-hawkins_web.jpgRIPON, Calif. (AP) — Walter Hawkins, a Grammy Award-winning gospel singer, composer and pastor from Oakland, died Sunday. He was 61.

Hawkins, who was battling pancreatic cancer, passed away at his home in Ripon, Calif., his older brother Edwin Hawkins said.

“Today, I lost my brother, my pastor, and my best friend,” said Edwin Hawkins. “Bishop Hawkins suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and he will be greatly missed.”

richardmcculloch2web.gifOn Thursday, July 8, 2010, I sat in front of my TV, wrestling with my personal allegiances when it comes to professional basketball. Though my hand wringing and fluctuating wants could not compare to the decision rollercoaster that NBA star LeBron James had been riding since the end of his 2010 playoff run with the Cleveland Cavaliers, I still was torn about which court King James should make his own next season.

Being a transplanted New Yorker here in the Sunshine State, I had to weigh hometown loyalty versus the possibility of having a South Florida Dream Team of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and James “Heat-ing” up the hardwood of Miami.
