barbara-jordan_web.jpgMIAMI –– In the wake of hurricanes Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan announced this week that she authored a resolution to establish a Hurricane Relief Drive for the people of the Caribbean.

The measure, supported by fellow Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson, passed successfully at the Sept. 16 county commission meeting.

zafar_alikhan_web.jpgPLANTATION — Several Central Broward residents are on edge about the Florida Department of Transportation’s plan to create a new mode of travel along Interstate 595.

Jacob Greene, president of the Broward Estates Civic Association, said at a community forum on Monday that citizens he represents remember how the Interstate 95 project displaced many people in Fort Lauderdale’s black community and other areas, such as Miami’s Overtown neighborhood.

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) — Economic fears are suddenly dominating the presidential campaign, shoving aside lipstick on pigs and every other issue. Republican John McCain called for a crisis commission Tuesday, while Democrat Barack Obama laughed that off as “the oldest Washington stunt in the book.”

“This isn't 9/11,” Obama told a noisy crowd of more than 2,000 at the Colorado School of Mines, dismissing the idea of a need for study. “We know how we got into this mess. What we need now is leadership that gets us out. I'll provide it. John McCain won't.”

jrrosskampweb.jpgNationwide, unemployment is at 6.1 percent. U.S. Bureau of Labor data point to an alarming 10.7 percent jobless rate for black Americans, 30.1 percent for black teens.  Official August numbers will be released Friday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m.              

As of July 2008, state jobless rates for workers of all races had soared: 8.5 percent in Michigan, 7.9 percent in Mississippi, 7.7 percent in Rhode Island, 7.3 percent in California and Illinois, 7.2 percent in Ohio, and 6.9 percent in Alaska.  Only South Dakota had a 3.0 percent rate.
