‘Weekend With the Experts’ series opens PDF Print E-mail

graduation_web.jpgFORT LAUDERDALE — The Broward County Public Schools Exceptional Student Education and Support Services Department is offering a series of free Saturday Weekend With the Experts workshops.

Although targeted for parents of students with disabilities, the workshops are open to all parents who wish to attend.

The second Saturday Weekend With the Experts  workshop will be held Oct. 6, 9 - 11 a.m., in conjunction with the Disability Expo at Nova Southeastern University, Alvin Sherman Library, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd., Davie.

Participants may attend the following workshops at the event:

Healthy Eating for All (9-11 a.m.) — Presenter: Darlene Moppert, Program Manager for Nutrition Education and Training, Food and Nutrition Services, Broward County Public Schools.  Participants will learn about plant-based nutrition (fruits, vegetables and grains) and the role they play in health, fitness and performance, as well as how to use a meal plate to guide healthful eating.

Miranda Rights: What You Need to Know/Police Interaction Seminar (9-11 a.m.) — Presenter: Stephanie L. Langer, Esq., staff attorney, Southern Poverty Law Center.
A brief history of Miranda Rights will be presented along with other information including how Miranda Rights are triggered, what they mean, why they are important and how they are used by law enforcement officials.  

Brain Gym for Parents
(9-11 a.m.) — Presenter: Kimberly Johnson, Licensed BrainGym Instructor and Consultant. Participants will learn a series of 26 movements that can improve concentration and focus, memory, academics and test-taking ability, physical coordination, relationships, self-responsibility, organization and attitude. 

Everyday Math for Struggling Learners (9:30-11 a.m.) — Presenter: Kitt Kelleher, M.S., Florida Diagnostic & Learning Resources System program specialist.
During a hands-on interactive presentation, participants will learn fun, family math games and how to assist reluctant math learners at home.

In addition to Weekend With the Experts workshops, many other free parent workshops will be offered throughout the year by the District’s ESE and Support Services Department, including the Active Parenting series for parents of preschool age children; parents of children, ages 5 to 12 and parents of teens, ages 12 to 18. The Active Parenting series is also offered in Spanish.

Among the topics of other workshops offered are: Educational Surrogate Parent Training, Early Literacy & Family Math for Preschool, Great Leaps Reading Success: Research-Based Pro gram to Help Your Child at Home, Helping Your Young Adult Cope with the Holidays and Toilet Training Pre-schoolers with Special Needs.

Online workshops and tutorials are also available.
