william_barber_1.jpgRALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ A legal motion by a coalition of civil rights groups claims voting districts drafted by the Republican-dominated North Carolina legislature disenfranchises black voters and asks a state court to declare the lines unconstitutional.

A review released Friday by the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People of the May primary voting in six counties with high concentrations of black voters found that high numbers of split precincts confused both elections workers and voters.

More than 2,000 registered voters were assigned to the wrong legislative or Congressional districts, with at least 222 people given the wrong ballot at the polls.

NAACP lawyers say their new motion is unlikely to be ruled on before the November election.

Republicans contend the new district lines are fair and legal.
