quentin_smith_copy.jpgGARY, Ind. (AP) _ A Gary man who was a member of the famed all-black World War II unit the Tuskegee Airmen has been laid to rest in northwestern Indiana.

Mourners gathered Tuesday at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Gary for funeral services for Quentin Smith, who died Jan. 15 at age 94.

The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/VjnCAj ) that Smith was born in Texas but came to northwestern Indiana in his youth. He was a World War II bombardier with the Tuskegee Airmen, the air corps unit that broke the U.S. military's color barrier.

After the war, Smith was a Gary school principal and served on the city council.

Smith's bronze replica of a Congressional Gold Medal was stolen in 2011 in a home burglary. He received a replacement medal last year.

Tuskegee Airman Quentin Smith was a bomber pilot, not a bombardier as reported. Smith graduated from flight training Class 45A-TE (twin engine) on March 11, 1945 at Tuskegee, AL.
