No Child:
A classroom. A group of “troubled” students. And an innovative, dedicated teacher. The story has been told time and time again. Playwright Nilaja Sun decided to broaden the schoolroom drama’s focus. Her one-woman play brings into focus all the essential characters required to create a thriving educational environment: how the roles of teacher, student, parent, principal, security guard and even janitor are all interdependent. No Child is presented at the Gable Stage at Biltmore, 1200 Anastasia Avenue in Coral Gables. The Friday, May 15 performance and the Saturday, May 16 performance start at 8 p.m. The Sunday, May 17 performance will be at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $37.50 to $42.50. Christopher Baker - The Musical: When Christopher Baker was told to “follow his dreams,” he never knew his decision would put him on a path filled with adversity, humor and triumph. Christopher Baker - The Musical follows the story of a young boy who must decide between his passion for football and his growing love for dance. This funny and heartwarming play will be showcased at Florida Memorial University’s Lou Rawls Theater, 15800 N.W. 42nd Ave. in Miami Gardens. The Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 shows start at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, May 17 show begins at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Thea Vidale - Down and Dirty Tour: Thea Vidale, the much-loved wise and willful matriarch of her short-lived sitcom, “Thea,’’ is making the rounds on the comedic circuit again, and is currently appearing at the New York Comedy Club, 8221 Glades Road in Boca Raton.  But this time, “Momma Thea” is ready to give some down home advice on everything from life, death to the birds and the bees. This show is definitely only for the grown and sexy. Ticket prices range from $15 to $22. Miami Haitian Compas Festival:
How can you say that you truly celebrated Haitian Heritage Month if you don't attend the annual Haitian Compas Festival? Back for its eleventh year, the Compas Festival will take place at Bicentennial Park, 1075 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. This year’s lineup includes Kreyol La, Djakout Mizik, Zenglen, Nu Look, Mizik Mizik, Gabel, and Back-up. The festival starts at 4 p.m. Tickets are $35. African Diaspora Authors:
The Historical Museum of South Florida, 101 W. Flagler in Miami, presents African Diaspora Authors. In this program, renowned novelists Tananarive Due, who grew up in Miami, and Edwidge Danticat, who lives here today, read from their best-selling works and discuss how living in South Florida has influenced their writing. Now that Comedy Central has canceled his show, “Chocolate News,’’ you'll have to get your David Alan Grier fix by catching one of his live performances. Mike Epps: Actor and comedian Mike Epps gives his only Miami performance. While starring in movies such as Next Friday, Friday After Next and All About the Benjamins introduced Epps to a wider audience, the man remained a stand-up comedian at heart. Epps brings his brash, confrontational routine focusing on urban cultural behaviors to the Fillmore Miami Beach Jackie Gleason Theatre, 1700 Washington Ave. in Miami Beach.
