alcalloway.jpgWhen groups such as the Black Panther Party, the Nation of Islam and various other black nationalist organizations appealed publicly for social justice, they were soundly denounced by white America as dangerous radicals and militants.

Fed by a national negative media frenzy, law enforcement created a brutal covert and overt crackdown that included killings, beatings, arrests and destruction of character and property. These actions created a fear that shut down many groups.

While civil rights organizations were meted with similar negativity, they had some liberal white press and philanthropy, even white and Jewish members and martyrs. The entire human rights/civil rights/freedom movement era, particularly during the mid-1960s to 70s, witnessed an ever-growing white backlash.

White America seethed with the sentiment that, “If you don’t like America, leave it.” The clear inference was that America is a white nation, and white people cannot be forced to share it with black people. Any value other than those instilled by white America is therefore un-American, socialist and communist.

The Patriot Act was established by the Bush administration, and it is noteworthy that personal criticisms of former President George W. Bush focused mainly on his misuse of the English language, his alleged botched military record and the possibility that he was being led by former Vice President Dick Cheney.

With the Patriot Act still in effect, white nationalists register no fear of calling President Barack Obama a socialist, a Hitler, a Muslim, when it is clear that he is a Christian.
This element of the populace mouths and displays all manner of other inappropriate and unpatriotic slogans.

Is it not un-American to add grist to the mill for our nation’s enemies abroad? Is it not un-American to both directly and indirectly promote the assassination of President Obama? I’d like to have a clear, believable answer to the following question: How does the American citizenry decide what is un-American?

Steaming vitriol spewing from that hodgepodge tea party crowd could possibly spill over as dangerous physical violence. Some very dangerous human viruses are hiding in that gathering movement.  Many ultra-conservative groups that spend weekends playing war in the deep woods have attached members to this anti-Obama (actually anti-black) outpouring.

It is quite apparent, from that which we witnessed recently on Capitol Hill, that the Tea Party and Republican U. S. senators and congresspersons are escalating the American divide, reminiscent of pre-Civil War America. It’s all about stopping Obama. Clearly, their wholesale rebuke of the health care reform legislation was/is just an attempt to undermine our president, by any means necessary!

White nationalists called black congressmen everything but the children of God, including the N-word, and even spat on one last week as members of the U. S. House of Representatives were about to enter the Capitol Building to vote on President Obama’s health care reform bill.

The very thought that citizens or non-citizens could behave like that, let alone toward black officials, is a ramification of values taught and reinforced from infancy to the grave.

What should make black Americans doubly wary of the Tea Party fringe and their Republican allies is that they falsely attest to religion, and they are mostly Christians! How can that be?  These people operate out of the same warped logic that allowed their mostly Christian forebears to practice genocide across the Americas, create and operate the Trans-Atlantic African Slave Trade, and discriminate against non-white people the world over.

White America is very proud of its criminality, and all school children must be tested on knowledge of discoverers/conquerors, slave masters/presidents, Indian killers/generals, developers/robber barons, et al.

So, what could possibly be un-American? Oh, I know! To sympathize with Muslim/Arab terrorism. Now clearly, that’s un-American. But it’s alright to be involved in terrorizing your fellow Americans, especially if they are non-white?

When the British decided to quell the Boston Tea Party by firing on its leaders, Crispus Attucks, a leader of African descent, was the first to fall, and the American Revolution was on.

Later, we had the Civil War, which was about the injustice of slavery. Now, could it be that the third and perhaps final phase of America’s internal struggle will be about democracy?

Such being the case, I wonder how America will resolve the question: How does society decide what is un-American?

Is Allen West a "white nationalist?"
written by VanVan, April 05, 2010
And how does a desire to shrink government and reduce the deficit translate into racism? Aren't we always hearing that peaceful Muslims should not be misjudged by the actions of a few? So I think Mr. Calloway should extend the same courtesy to the TP movement.
Understanding Mr. Calloway
written by Mike, April 05, 2010
I do not think Mr. Calloway is a racist. He is obviously very angry about past racial injustices and does not feel white people today fully appreciate how bad it really was. Hence he constantly reminds America of it white supremacist history. This is history and that is okay. He also questioned the Christianity of those who have engaged in evil (although he has said nothing of Pres. Obama's anti-Christian stances -i.e. abortion), which for us sincere Christians is appropriate as we want to be separated from false / phony Christians. Where he goes wrong is: 1.) He assumes all opposition to black politicians is rooted in racism - it's not; 2.) He seems to think we are in the 1950's or even 1850's! He refuses to acknowledge the great progress in recent decades. For the black community, things only appear to be getting better - i.e.Pres. Obama was elected. 3.) He grossly exaggerates - "But it's alright to be involved in terrorizing your fellow Amercian, especially if they are nonwhite." Tell that to the people of Philadelphia as roving gangs of black youths recently assaulted and attacked white people. Did he write about that?? Finally, Pres. Obama recently spoke to the NAACP and said: "No more excuses." I hope that in his future writings, Mr. Calloway will begin living in the present and not the past.

I see that a lot of Tea-partiers read your column, oh the irony.

You wrote: "These people operate out of the same warped logic that allowed their mostly Christian forebears to practice genocide across the Americas, create and operate the Trans-Atlantic African Slave Trade, and discriminate against non-white people the world over."

Christians were the first people in the history of the world to organize and try and stop slavery. They were disgusted with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and worked for more than a century to stop it. Most of the world for most of history accepted slavery as normal.

The Abolisionists were motived by Christianity in their efforts to get rid of slavery in the United States and other Western cultures. You should read what they said at the time, and find out who they were.

The rest of the column is "twisted logic," indeed.

I can only tell by the choice of words here, but the writer appears to be a hate-filled, racist man, stuffed with selective bile about his own culture and background, disgusted with his neighbors and, apparently, anyone who has less skin pigment than he has. He's a classic loudmouth bigot, with a short fuse and a narrow worldview. He has my sincere pity.

Republic

My republic limits your democracy.
The Constitution outlaws democratic lynch mobs just as it outlaws tyranny at the government level.
If you can figure out a way to meet your goals within the limits of the Constitution we can talk about it, but until then you've got a fight on your hands.

Al, if you google the tea party spitting incident, you'll find it has been debunked. There are also a ton of videos of the N-word incident out there, and if you can hear the N-word in any of them, someone's offering $10K as a reward.

The point being that what you want to be true simply isn't, so the question is: Why do you want it to be true? I think a little self-reflection is in order, along with apologies to tea partiers.

Mr. Calloway,
I would submit that left or right isn’t the problem. It’s polarization and willfull blindness. You are the pot calling the kettle black. Every tactic and stragety you rightfully accuse the right of using are also willfully used by the left and YOU. Did YOU ever speakout that the war protestors were encouraging insurgents to contiue to resist? Did YOU ever speak out when Bush was called a n**i, Hitler or his Christian faith was questioned? Did YOU ever speak out against the tactics of Code Pink or Black Panther member’s intimtidation of voters? Did YOU ever speak out of the reflexive charges of racism agains any and all that don’t agree with the president? Do YOU have any proof that any Tea Party members spat on a black congress man? ( If so, YOU should contact Andrew Breitbart and collect the $100,000 reward he’s offering. )
Until YOU can answer these questions, YOU need to seriously consider that aside from in habiting the left side of the poltical spectrum, YOU are not better than the right wing demoquaes YOU condemn. In the mean time, please keep refrain from the Saul Alinsky inspired poliarization tactics and stop spreading hate.
There are many false Christians on both sides
written by Mike, April 02, 2010
Mr. Calloway, I agree with you wholeheartedly that through the centuries many have used Jesus to justify anti-Jesus behavior. There is NOTHING in the teachings of Jesus or his apostles as found in the Bible to support violence against anyone. Quite the contrary - turn the other cheek, love your enemy, do not return evil for evil, pray for those persecuting you - are all nonviolent foundational principles of Christianity. However, many of Pres. Obama's actions contradict those same teachings. Abortion - violence against the unborn, is an example. Pres. Obama is the most pro-abortion President ever!! He gives his blessing to those killing and murdering their own children. He even supported partial birth abortion. This is not only unchristian- it is demonic! He has consistently denied that the unborn are children of God. He refuses to protect them, give them rights or consider them as human beings(the very same arguments of the slave traders). What kind of man conceives two children, goes through the stages of pregnancy with his wife, sees the sonograms, and still says: 'I don't know when life begins - it's above my paygrade.' -Definitely not a Christian. So while you are rightly skeptical of the "warped logic" of Tea Partiers and their claim to be Christian, should you not also be skeptical of Pres. Obama's "warped logic" and his claim to be a disciple of the Christ?
