crystal-lake-townhomes_rendering_web.jpgHOLLYWOOD — The Broward County Housing Authority announced it broke ground on Crystal Lake Townhomes, a 10-unit, $1.8 million affordable housing project in Hollywood.

It is the first solo development for the Lauderdale Lakes-based agency.

The two- and three-bedroom units will be located adjacent to Crystal Lake Apartments, an existing housing development of the authority and will house persons earning up to 120 percent of the area’s median income of $61,800.

Coral Gables-based JB Builders & Contractors Inc. will build the homes which will take between eight and 12 months to complete, according to Ann Deibert, the authority’s CEO.

“This is a significant step for BCHA,” Deibert said in a statement announcing the project. “We are not only increasing the affordable housing stock in Broward County but also stimulating local economic growth.”

The authority said it has begun work on two additional projects in the past few months. One is the 155-unit East Village community in Davie, a $29 million project being developed with the Carlisle Development Group. The other is the 76-unit high rise Progresso Point apartment building in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a $14 million project being developed with Reliance Housing Foundation.

The authority said in its 50 years of providing affordable and low-income housing in Broward County, it has provided homes for nearly 12,000 residents, using public and private funds.

It focuses on “providing affordable housing through the ownership/management of properties, administration of rental subsidies and counseling of homeowners and prospective owners,” the statement said.
