MIAMI – Archbishop Thomas Wenski celebrated Mass yesterday at Immaculata-La Salle High School, located at 3601 South Miami Avenue in Miami.
The Mass began promptly at 9:30 a.m. with students and members of the community.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40- day Lenten season, a time of penance and preparation for the commemoration of the passion and death of Jesus Christ and His ultimate resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Lent concludes with the celebration of the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday – the first day of the Easter Triduum – followed by Good Friday services and the celebration of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday.
Ash Wednesday is a day of abstinence from meat for Catholics over the age of 14. It is also a day of fasting – one full meal and two small meals, with nothing eaten between meals – for adults ages 18-59.
An additional Mass in celebration of Ash Wednesday was held by Fr. Elvis Gonzalez at 11:45 a.m. at St. Martha Church, 9221 Biscayne Blvd in Miami Shores.
