FORT LAUDERDALE —Hollywood, Miramar and Wilton Manors have won the first Cities of Excellence award for outstanding initiatives they have implemented to improve the quality of life of residents.
The award, which is sponsored by the Broward League of Cities, attracted more than 52 entries judged by an independent panel, according to a statement from the organization.
Hollywood copped the Green Leaf Award for its RecycleBank program that has helped the city collect 17 million pounds of recyclables, divert an additional 9.6 million pounds from the waste stream and generate more than $520,000 in savings and additional revenues.
Miramar was honored with the Community Spirit Award for its Community for a Lifetime program that provides intergenerational programming at two senior citizens centers and five early childhood centers. The program offers people of varied ages, races and cultures a chance to share connections with one another.
Wilton Manors received the Peacock Award for increasing its tree canopy and beautifying the municipality by planting more than 500 native trees in parks and other city-owned properties and along swales through its Tree Trust Fund program.
"We created the Cities of Excellence awards program to spread awareness of successful projects and to share best practices for enhancing the quality of life throughout all cities in Broward County," Broward League of Cities President Debby Eisinger said in the statement.
"We received a great reception in our first year and look forward to continuing the program for many years to come," said Eisinger, who is also mayor of Cooper City.
The league, which was chartered in 1957, is a non-partisan, non-profit organization representing the 31 municipal governments and more than 80 associate government, non-profit and business organizations in Broward County.
Its mission is to increase awareness and provide resolutions to issues that affect day-to-day operations at the county, state, and federal levels. For more information visit BrowardLeague.org or Facebook.com/Browardleague.
