DALLAS (AP) — Bishop T.D. Jakes was recently honored with a gala to mark his 35 years of ministry.
Movie and television mogul Tyler Perry and CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien hosted the black-tie event Friday night at the Winspear Opera House in downtown Dallas.
Jakes is senior pastor of The Potter's House, a 30,000-member Dallas-based church. He is also a bestselling author, has produced several films and was involved in the remake of Sparkle, Whitney Houston's last film.
Chaka Khan performed Friday, along with an array of gospel singers. Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance were among the attendees.
Jakes' daughter Sarah Henson said prior to the event that her father knew his family was planning something but didn't know how big the celebration would be.
Jakes also celebrated his 55th birthday on Saturday.
