CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ The racial makeup of the Charleston peninsula has reversed in the past three decades with white people now making up two thirds of the population of the downtown area.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Tuesday that's just the opposite of the population in the area 30 years ago. Census figures show there are about 10,000 blacks living on the peninsula compared with almost 21,000 whites.

Rising property values and the trend of blacks moving to the suburbs are apparently contributing to the shift.
