americorps_web.jpgCity Year, an AmeriCorps national service program, and the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department, through its Violence Intervention Project, hosted about 130 Miami-Dade County middle and high school students for “The Roots of Violence” workshop.

The students heard from guest speakers and used hands-on strategies and workshops to learn about conflict resolution and the impact of violence on a community.

In the weeks leading up to the gathering, City Year Young Heroes – youth who are in the City Year program — created a moveable mural dealing with violence.  At the conference, they presented the signed mural to the Department of Juvenile Services as a pledge against violence.

City Year comprises a group of 17-24-year-olds who serve as mentors, tutors, and role models for the youth known as Young Heroes.

The conference took place March 26 at  City Year, 44 W Flagler St., Suite 500, Miami.
