barbara_jordan_web.jpgMIAMI LAKES — More than 20 persons who enrolled in Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan’s annual Summer Youth Internship Initiative eight weeks ago celebrated the program’s completion on Aug. 12 at Don Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club in Miami Lakes during a special luncheon. Jordan joined the interns and business partners involved in the program to mark the graduation.

The program advocates strong commitment to the professional development of students in Jordan’s District 1, according to a statement from her office.

It involves an interview, a two-day orientation to learn business etiquette, financial literacy and resume writing, as well as tips for improving interviewing skills.

 As an additional requirement, students are required to do community service and take part in team-building projects through which they learn the importance of civic involvement and team work.

This summer, Jordan provided high school and college students with an opportunity to work and build partnerships with some of the district’s prominent businesses and organizations.

They included Lawrence Wright and Partners, Warren Henry Automobiles,  Avenue, AA Acquisitions, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Orange Bowl Committee, Calder Race Course, Larry Willis Insurance Agency, Dwight Stephenson Construction, EAC Consulting, North Dade Community Development Federal Credit Union, Experience Aviation, Florida Marlins, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, Miami Dolphins, El Dorado Furniture, GJB Consulting and Lehman Toyota/Scion/Mazda.

Jordan’s office was also an internship site.

“I’m proud of each of my interns for successfully completing this year’s program and am pleased to announce that two of my interns were offered permanent positions with participating businesses,” Jordan said.

The interns who completed the program are Vladimir Blanchard, who interned with D. Stephenson Construction Inc.; Brittany Baptiste, Florida Marlins; Xavier Hopkins, Miami Dolphins/Sun Life Stadium; Khadijah Brydson, GJB Consulting; Lynn Norvilus, Calder Casino & Race Course; Lindsey Baker, El Dorado Furniture; Cy Forston, Lehman Toyota; Isaiah Herbert, Lawrence Wright & Partners.

Forston secured a full-time job with Lehman Toyota and Burnett-Johnson good a full-time job with EAC Consulting.
