MIRAMAR — The life of civil rights activist Daisy Bates from her days as an orphan to newspaperwoman to activist will be examined in the film Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock.
The screening continues the Southern Circuit Independent Film Series on Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark, 2400 Civic Center Pl. on Red Road, north of Miramar Parkway, in Miramar.

Bates became a household name in 1957 when she fought for the right of nine black students to attend the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., culminating in a constitutional crisis that positioned a president against a governor and a community against itself.
Following the screening the film’s director and producer Sharon La Cruise and the audience will engage in a discussion about the film and her work as a filmmaker.
In reviewing the film, Julian Bond, chairman emeritus of the NAACP, said, “This is a well-told intimate story of a heroine of the modern civil rights movement who is not as well-known as she should be. Daisy Bates was a pioneer and path breaker. Congratulations to Sharon La Cruise for bringing her story to the screen.”
The Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers series concludes with Follow the Leader on April 11.
