SAN DIEGO (AP) _ A federal agency that fights work place discrimination says a private Southern California university denied tenure to a black professor due to her race and later fired her.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Chapman University in Orange, Calif.
The lawsuit says the university in 2006 denied tenure to the business school's sole black faculty member who was highly regarded by colleagues. The unnamed professor was fired in 2008.
The commission says the university, meanwhile, promoted poorer performing professors.
The lawsuit seeks punitive damages and a court order to prevent such practices.
University spokeswoman Mary Platt says the college has no knowledge of the lawsuit.
