DETROIT (AP) _ The Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit is holding a funeral Mass for retired auxiliary Bishop Moses B. Anderson, the first black bishop to serve in the post.
The 84-year-old died last Tuesday of cardiac arrest.
Anderson's funeral is Monday at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit. Visitation starts an hour before the Mass.
He was born in Selma, Ala., and attended Edmundite College of St. Michael's in Winooski, Vt., and St. Edmund Seminary in Burlington, Vt. He was ordained a priest in 1958.
In 1983, Pope John Paul II named Anderson a bishop, and Detroit Cardinal Edmund Szoka (SHAH'-kuh) ordained him.
Anderson also was pastor at Detroit's Precious Blood Parish in 1992-2001. He frequently ministered in Ghana, where he was honored as a tribal chief.
