flooded_home.jpgMiami-Dade County and the Florida Division of Emergency Management are partnering to help flood prone property owners find relief.

Through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Flood Mitigation Assistance, Repetitive Flood Claims and Severe Repetitive Loss programs, homeowners can receive funding to elevate their homes or to relocate.

Mitigation efforts can also involve less expensive measures, including the creation of culverts, retention ponds and landscaping berms.

More than 3,000 homeowners in Miami-Dade County have filed repetitive flood claims and may be eligible for federal funding to prevent future losses.

Mitigation in flood prone areas prevents needless suffering, increases the attractiveness of the communities where the properties are located and can result in lower flood insurance payments for property owners through the Community Rating System.

All property owners applying for these grants must have a current National Flood Insurance Fund (NFIP) policy in effect.

To provide more information about FEMA’s grant assistance programs, workshops have been scheduled as follows:

• 6-8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 15, town of Cutler Bay Council Chambers, 10720 Caribbean Blvd., Cutler Bay

•  6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Auditorium, 9300 NW 41st St., Doral.
