MIAMI (AP) — A Miami businessman has been sentenced to almost five years in prison for trying to bribe Haitian officials to win contracts.

Juan Diaz was ordered Friday to pay $74,000 in restitution and forfeit $1 million – a sum equal to the amount he handed in bribes to former Haitian officials.
When his 57-month sentence is finished, the 51-year-old Diaz will serve three more years on supervised release.

Diaz pleaded guilty last year to a single count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He was working as an intermediary for three private telecommunications companies trying to cozy up to Haiti's national carrier.

Prosecutors say Diaz concealed the payments by laundering them through his company, J.D. Locator Services.
