bk_school_shop_web.jpgDELRAY BEACH — Saturday, Aug. 11 will be the third year that the nonprofit organization All People’s Day Inc., is running the “Back to School, Brown Bag Special Clothing Drive” for children from infants to college age.

The drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 188 S. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach.

Families struggling in the current tough economy will be able to fill large shopping bags with clothes and school supplies for a donation of only $5 for each bag.  Last year more than 100 bags were filled and the families raved about the high quality of the goods, said Susan Berkowitz-Schwartz, All People’s Day founder. “This year we hope to serve even more families.”

A touching example of how the event resonates with the community, she said “is the account of a woman and her grandson who arrived wheeling an upright shopping basket. The grandmother told us that she had recently lost her job because she was having terrible pains in her legs and back and could no longer perform the work. Her three grandkids that lived with her and her daughter were in need of clothes for school. Since her daughter was also out of work and unable to find another job this family was on an extremely tight budget. They filled two bags with great clothes for all three kids and thanked us profusely as the grandson wheeled the basket home.”

Proceeds go toward the All People’s Day Diversity Festival, which is held in Delray Beach in March, free and open to the public, she said. Families attending the drive “get a fantastic buy for their kids and feel good about contributing to this free community event that celebrates everyone’s diversity.

“If you’re a volunteer or able to donate clothing, school supplies or funds you too will get that special feeling of knowing you are helping others.”
