MIAMI — The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce — umbrella organization for black-owned business in the county — will host the fifth installment in its 2011 business empowerment series titled “Mission Possible: Getting Through the Maze of Certification.”

The networking workshop will guide business owners through the maze of the certification process.

It will take place Thursday, Oct. 6, at Jungle Island, with the luncheon featuring a keynote speech by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan.

Other speakers will include Jeanise Cummings-Labossiere, an administrative officer  with the Miami-Dade County Department of Small Business Development; Michelle Hicks-Levy, an administrator with the Minority Women Business Enterprise Program; and Evangeline Horner, a Business Development specialist with the SBA.

Panelists will discuss their business certification “best practices” and introduce attendees to certification departments and organizations. Participants will include the U.S. Small Business Administration South Florida Branch, Miami-Dade County Small Business Development agency, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, South Florida Minority Supplier Development Council, Women’s Development Council, and the city of North Miami.

“In today’s tough economic environment, the majority of black-owned and minority-based businesses provide services to many of this country’s municipalities and government entities. By conducting seminars on how your business can become certified to do business with these municipalities, we are assisting with the direct growth and development of the black business community,” chamber president/CEO Bill Diggs said in a statement announcing the workshop.

“We are excited to be playing such a pivotal role in the job growth of our city and county.”

The series is open to the public, free for chamber members and $20 for non-members. This project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, at Jungle Island’s Treetop Ballroom, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami.
