WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama praises consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren as a "dear friend'' and says he has discussed a new Consumer Protection Bureau with her.
But he says he's not ready to announce a new director for the agency.
Warren, a Harvard law professor, is popular with liberals and tops a list of potential candidates to head the consumer bureau created under a new sweeping financial regulation bill.
He praised the legislation's provisions, saying they could save consumers "tens of billions of dollars.''
Obama was asked during a news conference Friday whether he was ready to name Warren to the post. He's not, but acknowledged meeting with her as recently as this week.
