The venues that will hold events include the McWane Science Center. It once was a Loveman’s Department Store that was the site of sit-ins by civil rights protesters.
The events of 1963 in Birmingham included civil rights marches led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.; violent clashes between protesters and public safety workers; and the deadly bombing of a black church. Bell says the commemoration can show how far Birmingham has come in the last half-century.
