PITTSBURGH (AP) – State Rep. Jake Wheatley has received the endorsement for Pittsburgh mayor from the first-ever convention of black Pittsburgh voters.
Former City Councilman Sala Udin helped organized Saturday's Pittsburgh Black Political Convention, in part, because Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's decision not to run again has made this year's mayoral race more wide open than others.
Wheatley is one of two black Democrats running for mayor.
The other, Abdula Jamal Richardson, a self-described community activist considered a long-shot in next month's primary, didn't get any votes at the convention. Wheatley got 52 percent.
Councilman Bill Peduto got 33 percent while former city council president and state auditor general Jack Wagner got 13 percent. Wagner and Peduto are considered the front-runners.
Josh Wander, the only Republican running, got the remaining votes.
