MIAMI – When his native Haiti was devastated by an earthquake in 2010, Joseph Veve Max II’s interest in becoming a civil engineer grew stronger. He came to Miami not long after, where he enrolled at Miami Dade College, North Campus to delve into what has always fascinated him – standing structures such as houses, buildings and skyscrapers.
He also has excelled academically – although achieving a 3.9 GPA wasn’t easy. The Civil Engineering graduate now plans to take the skills he learned to help build low-income housing that can withstand natural disasters in Haiti, where his family, including both parents, still live.
“My greatest obstacle was language since I did high school in Haiti,” Max said. “I also had to become very disciplined.” He placed second last year in a statewide math competition. As a hobby, he enjoys playing guitar and writing poetry. President of the Haitian Club and voted as the most outstanding member of North Campus’ Math Club, Max still finds time to get involved in the local Haitian community. So far, he’s been accepted into Cornell University and Georgia Tech.
