CARLINVILLE, Ill. (AP) _ Illinois State Police are investigating a former southern Illinois trooper's barroom altercation with a college student, who contends the law enforcer bumped him and used a racial slur.

Ken Snider resigned as a trooper, president of the Carlinville school board and head of the Macoupin County Democratic Party shortly after the St. Patrick's Day fight last month at the Anchor Inn in Carlinville.

Blackburn College student Bryan Reynolds tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Snider twice bumped him in the tavern and called the black student a racial epithet and other derogatory names, starting the fight.

No charges have been filed.

A message left Tuesday at Snider's home wasn't returned.
