ROAD TOWN, British Virgin Islands (AP) _ The leader of the British Virgin Islands says his government hopes to reopen a luxury resort that shuttered last week, or at least help workers find other jobs.

The Biras Creek Resort ended operations last week. A message on the resort’s website doesn’t report why it closed, but says it’s exploring options to relocate reservations.

In a Sunday statement, Premier Orlando Smith says he is optimistic “we can find a way to reopen the property.” Meanwhile, he says his administration is talking to several hotels about hiring dozens of redundant workers.

The boutique resort on Virgin Gorda island is situated on 140 acres (57 hectares) on a peninsula that’s only accessible by boat or helicopter. Michigan-based Victor International Corp. bought Biras Creek in 2006.
