For the first time, Ebola has been discovered inside the eyes of a patient months after the virus was gone from his blood.

The case concerns Dr. Ian Crozier, an American physician who caught Ebola in September while working in West Africa.

He was treated at Emory University in Atlanta and released when he was no longer contagious. Two months later, he developed an inflammation and very high blood pressure in one eye and returned to Emory, where tests showed Ebola inside the eye.

Tears did not have the virus, so casual contact with Ebola survivors is not thought to be a health risk.

Doctors described the case Thursday at a medical conference in Denver and it was published by the New England Journal of Medicine.
