WEST PALM BEACH — The flu season, which began last fall, has been uncharacteristically quiet throughout the country including South Florida. However, public health officials remind that it still can be deadly as evidenced by a report that two Miami Dade children died from confirmed influenza-like Illness earlier this month.
“We don’t want to alarm the community but rather remind everyone that we are still into the flu season and there are proven ways to prevent catching the flu beginning with an annual flu shot,” said Palm Beach County Health Department Director Alina Alonso.
Alonso offered the following preventive measures to help continue protecting against the flu: Cover nose and mouth completely when coughing or sneezing. Get a flu shot — supplies are still available at county health centers. Stay home when sick. Wash hands with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer if washing is not available. Avoid close contact with someone who is sick. Avoid touching your eyes and mouth.
