andy_warhol_art_web.jpgThe Miramar Cultural Center is hosting an exhibition of some of the works of famed artists such as including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist and Roy Lichtenstein.

Pop Art in America: Selections from the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University runs through April 2011.

The pieces on display sample the works of the best known American Pop artists, all of whom have embraced mass media and often employed mechanical processes to make their creations rather than those traditionally associated with fine art.

The Pop Art movement, which began in the late 1950s, was rooted in the imagery of mass popular culture by themes and techniques found primarily in advertising, comic books, music and mundane cultural objects.

It asserted that an artist's use of the mass-produced visual commodities of popular culture was contiguous with the perspective of fine art. This concept refers not only to the art itself but the attitudes that led to it.

The exhibit is on display at the Ansin Family Art Gallery in the Miramar Cultural Centers/ArtsPark, at 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar.
