SEATTLE (AP) _ The Space Needle says it will be holding its first public stair climb in the Seattle icon’s history to help benefit cancer research.

The climb to the observation deck will take place Oct. 3. The event will be open to up to 3,000 people. Participants will pay a registration fee and have to raise a minimum amount in donations.

The donations will go to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, while the registration fees will be used for the Space Needle Foundation.

The 605-foot tall Space Needle was built for the 1962 World’s Fair.
