The U.S. Attorney's Office reports that Jean Therve was sentenced on Thursday for attempting to bribe a federal immigration official.

The 29-year-old Haitian was accused of offering a deportation officer $3,000 in late 2011 to release him from a federal detention center.

After a series of conversations, Therve arranged to have an initial payment of $1,400 delivered to the officer.

Marsh said that Therve will be deported back to Haiti once he completes his prison sentence.
