Cancer Awareness: Mastermind and Mahaqni SL will hold a “Rebirth Grand Opening” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with cancer awareness on center stage. It will take place at 3503 NE Second Ave. in Miami and will feature a free fashion show, vendors, information on what can be done about hair loss caused by cancer and 50 percent off chemical hair services. Haitian Luncheon: U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings will give the keynote address at the Haitian American Democratic Club’s annual luncheon at the Gold Choice Ballroom, 345 S. State Road 7, Margate, from 1-5 p.m. The gathering will focus on the November general elections, the role of the Club and  reconstruction of Haiti. Haitian food and music will be featured. McIntyre Institute: The McIntyre Institute Dance Theater and many other performing artists will perform at the free preview of the new  Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th St., Aventura. Home Energy Workshops
: Miami Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson will host Home Energy Savings Workshops at Legion Memorial Park, 6447 NE Seventh Ave., Miami, dealing with energy efficiency and conservation information for homeowners, including resources and incentives to reduce their utility costs. Attendees will be given a free energy savings packet and information on tracking household energy consumption/reduction. They will be shown how to reduce energy use in the home by 20-30 percent. Jazz Jam: The Lauderhill Business Expo will end with a jazz concert from noon to 6 p.m. The family-oriented event will feature Joan Cartwright & Jazz Hotline featuring saxophonist Malcolm Black and Sons of My-Stro Violinists; Eugene Grey and Company; Tribal Wholistic Dancers; and Parkway Middle Jazz and Vocal Ensembles. Free Mammograms: Woman 2 Woman Foundation is offering free mammograms during October at the Broward P.E.T Imaging Center, 4850 W. Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale. Opera Tickets: The Miramar Cultural Center, 240 Civic Center Place, Miramar, has begun selling tickets for three operas to be performed during its 2011 season: Lucia Di Lammermoor, Turandot and Madama Butterfly. Divorce retreat: The Family Life Office of the Archdiocese of Miami is sponsoring a two-night, three-day retreat for people dealing with significant loss, with primary focus on the divorce experience. The weekend will be a time for personal reflection and small-group sharing. The retreat is open to all faiths and will end with the celebration of Sunday Eucharist.
