TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. (AP) _ Deputies have fatally shot a man wanted for sexually abusing a young girl after they say he charged them with a knife inside a southwest Florida motel.
An 11-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital last week after she complained of stomach pains. Tests showed she was pregnant. The mother's live in boyfriend, Gregory Johns, fled the hospital.
Authorities said Johns allegedly sexually abused the girl several times. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Two deputies forced their way into Johns' hotel room Saturday. They said Johns then locked himself in the bathroom. As deputies tried to enter, he allegedly charged them with a knife.
They opened fire on Johns, killing him.
The deputies have been placed on routine paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
