MAULANA KARENGA VIRTUAL KWANZAA LECTURE DEC. 27: The National Association of Kawaida Organizations and The International African Arts Festival will present the 54th Kwanzaa Celebration, featuring the creator of Kwanzaa, and Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater, as well as highlights of other internationally known artists from the 49th annual festival, 2 – 4 p.m. at iaafestival.org. ARSHT CALLING ALL MIAMI ARTISTS: The Adrienne Arsht Center invites performing artists to participate in the new Heart of Art online community project by sharing their “Art in the Time of Coronavirus.” Using video as the virtual stage, 30 Miami-based performing artists will each be awarded $1,000 to create new works of dance, music, theater, spoken word and other performing arts that capture the community’s unique voice and experience during this unprecedented crisis. The new video works will be showcased on the Arsht Center’s website and promoted across the center’s social media platforms and Arsht@Home e-newsletter. 2021 METRO 1 MLK ART CONTEST & EXHIBITION: A showcase for diverse community artists in conjunction with the 44th Annual MLK Holiday parade, with the event theme, “Power In the People! … Freedom, Equality & Prosperity,” designed to echo the optimistic activism of the 1960s, the contest is open to artists ages 16 and older who may submit works in eight categories: Drawings, Paintings & Multi-media Canvasses; Short Film/Video; Mixed media; Music; Photography; Poetry; Sculpture; and Site Mural Design. A grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded to one winner from any category, $500 to the Site Mural Design winner, and $250 to one winner in each of the other categories.
