FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward College-Miramar Campus will be the venue for the South Florida Black Journalists Association’s (SFBJA) Career Fair this Saturday from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. In addition to networking opportunities and resume dropping, the event will feature a series of workshops. One workshop, entitled “Covering Mass Shootings,” features three local journalists who have covered the rash of tragic shootings. Lulu Ramadan, a reporter for the Palm Beach Post and one of the panelists, said that covering these tragic events can be “emotionally draining.”

“I’m 23 years old and just got this job right out of college and in three years I have covered three mass shootings,” said Ramadan. Ramadan did full coverage of the Orlando Pulse Night Club shooting in Orlando, the Fort Lauder Airport shooting, and the Parkland shooting in Miami-Dade. “First responders suffer through it… families suffer through it, but often reporters suffer through it too,” said Ramadan.

Companies and media outlets which will be recruiting at the fair include: CBS Miami/TV, Heart Media, Miami Times, Heart Media, Legacy Magazine, WSVN, Alpha Media, WLRN, Telemundo, and many more. NBC6 news anchor Jawan Strader will begin the career fair with a keynote address at 10 a.m. The entrance fee is $10 through Eventbrite online at https://sfbja2018mediacareerfair.eventbrite.com. The fee is $15 for attendees who pay at the door. The event is free to SFBJA members who pre-register online and for students who provide a school email.

The SFBJA is a local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists or NABJ which brings together journalists, students and all media-related professionals to expand the presence Black journalists in newsrooms nationwide.
