MIAMI – The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is now requiring legal immigrants living in the state to renew their driver’s licenses each year.

DMV officials said the new policy falls in line with the federal REAL ID Act and to enhance security.

The updated policy, which took effect immediately and without a grace period, requires all non-U.S. citizens, even those in the country legally, to renew their licenses every year.

In addition, licenses issued to individuals whose immigration documents do not have an expiration date will now be valid for only one year from the date of issuance.
