MIAMI – Florida parents worry themselves when they send their kids off to school who have to walk in areas with a high rate of speeding cars and accidents.

But a new law might put parents’ concerns at ease.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a new bill into law which requires all state school districts to provide bus service to students who live in areas considered dangerous to walk or bike through with an onslaught of traffic.

Under the new legislation, sidewalks less than four feet wide, walkways next to roads with speed limits of 50 mph or higher, and uncurbed paths do not set at least three feet from traffic now meet the criteria for “hazardous conditions.”

School districts must comply to provide school buses in those areas, where most accidents occur including kids and cars collisions.

State Representative Kim Kendall, who sponsored House Bill 85, said the bill was prompted by multiple close calls and serious accidents in the area.
