West Palm Beach – The yearlong multimedia exhibition, “Jazz In Unexpected Places,” opened to an enthusiastic fullhouse reception Oct. 16 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. “From the Sunset Lounge to Club Alabama, to The Cotton Club, to living rooms, jam sessions, backyard barbeques and marching bands, visitors will experience voices from the past and the present,” the exhibition proclaims. Following an opening jazz concert, visitors – many of whom had lived the very history on display – strolled amid vintage and contemporary photographs, classic LP album covers and audiovisual exhibits, and also were invited to contribute to the experience by adding their stories to the Community Tribute Wall. Among the opening night attendees, Annie Harrison Nelson reminisced while pointing to rare materials from the late Ineria Hudnell’s history collection, now part of the local African American Research Library, while Allyson DuPree Smith and renown songstress Avery Sommer posed with the latter’s photo, which also is part of the display.
