MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ The Wisconsin Supreme Court is expected to decide Thursday whether a former state senator convicted of accepting kickbacks can practice law again.
Gary George, a Milwaukee Democrat who served in the Senate 23 years, was convicted in 2004 of accepting monthly cash payments that flowed from a nonprofit group that received state funds.
He was sentenced to 48 months in prison.
State regulators have tried for years to revoke his law license, and George is appealing that recommendation from a referee. George says his license suspension, which remains in effect, should be discipline enough.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court agreed with George in 2008, saying the lengthy suspension should suffice because of George's long public service and previously clean disciplinary record.
