Fort Lauderdale – Germaine Smith-Baugh, above, president and CEO, and The Urban League of Broward County hosted their 50th Anniversary Red Gala on Saturday at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center, celebrating five decades of service, leadership and impact in advancing social and economic equity for families. More than 800 community leaders gathered for the “Storybook” themed event which showcased the league’s achievements and featured remarks from community leaders and dignitaries including Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Sheila Cherfilus McCormick, and Herman Lessard of the National Urban League. At this year’s signature fundraising event the not-for-profit organization founded in 1975, and headed by the only female CEO leading a National Urban League affiliate in Florida, recognized three honorees for significant contributions: Andrew Koenig, president and CEO of City Furniture; Marcia Barry Smith, president and CEO of MBS Consulting Advisors, and Urban League alumna Marie Coe.
