TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Slightly more than one in five eligible Florida voters participated in the primary election.
The Secretary of State's office said Monday turnout for the Aug. 24 primary was 21.9 percent.
That's not unusual in this state, where voters have a long history of low participation in midterm primaries. The state's largest population center fared even worse than average.
In Miami-Dade and Broward County, just 17.2 percent and 14.7 percent voted. It wasn't much better in neighboring Palm Beach County, which saw only 16.2 percent turnout.
A total of 2.4 million votes were cast in last Tuesday's election, in which Rick Scott upset Bill McCollum in the Republican gubernatorial primary and U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.
