ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -A white supremacist serving 2 1/2 years in prison is being ordered to pay half of a $545,000 civil claim filed by black residents of a Virginia Beach apartment complex he harassed.

A federal jury in Roanoke returned the verdict Friday against William A. White. Jurors ordered him to pay the tenants damages of $265,000 and the American National Socialist Party to pay the remaining sum.

Jurors have not decided if the tenants should be awarded punitive damages.

The five tenants said White racially harassed them in May 2007 after they filed a discrimination suit against their landlord.

White is serving the prison term for making online threats and witness intimidation.
