FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – CareerSource Broward announced that it has been awarded a National Dislocated Worker Grant to provide temporary employment for Broward County residents who have been affected by Hurricane Irma.

The grant, which is administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), will be used to help offer disaster relief employment in the form of temporary jobs that support post-Hurricane Irma recovery efforts.

“Many of our residents were severely impacted by the recent storm, and we want to do our part to help relieve the economic burdens that some families are now facing,” said Mason C. Jackson, President and CEO of CareerSource Broward. “Not only do these jobs provide much-needed employment for those who may be experiencing financial hardships, but it also allows individuals to give back to their community and assist with the local recovery efforts right here in Broward County.”

Disaster relief employment jobs will mainly involve debris removal and clean up of areas affected by the hurricane, along with humanitarian and restoration assistance.

Individuals who qualify for disaster relief employment are those who are temporarily or permanently laid off as a consequence of the disaster, dislocated workers and individuals who are long-term unemployed.

“DEO is working with local CareerSource Florida workforce boards across the state to connect dislocated job seekers with cleanup opportunities,” said DEO Executive Director Cissy Proctor. “We will continue to use these grants and all other resources we have available to help communities fully recover from Hurricane Irma.”

CareerSource Broward hosted an on-site recruitment event for anyone interested in participating in its Disaster Dislocated Workers Program on Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at its Central career center Job Club Room, 2610 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.

Individuals who plan to attend the recruitment event are asked to bring a valid Social Security card and government-issued picture ID.

There are currently nearly 180 positions that need to be filled and veterans and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
