MIAMI – His “rags to riches” story is one of America’s most inspirational. Wearing multiple hats as a director, screenwriter, playwright, author, producer and songwriter, Tyler Perry will bring his message of empowerment to this year’s 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project’s 25TH Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 15 at 8:30 a.m.

This annual signature fundraising event and celebration brings together members of South Florida’s diverse community to commemorate the life and teachings of Dr. King and to demonstrate community-wide support of the mentoring program.

The event, to be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton, raises scholarship money for graduating seniors of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. The program has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships since its founding in 1993. This year, 58 Wilson Scholars in the Class of 2018 will be awarded scholarships.

The program’s founder, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (D-FL 24) stated that “she is extremely proud of the determination to succeed demonstrated by these deserving young men who never dreamed that college would be a part of their portfolio.”
