MIAMI – President Donald Trump is offering to pay migrants without legal status $1,000 if they leave the country on their own will.
Trump made the announcement on Monday at the White House when discussing his massive illegal immigration crackdown operation, the United States’ attempt to take over Canada and tariffs battle with China.
Trump’s proposal adds another layer to his contentious plan to remove migrants from the U.S. including revoking the Temporary Status Protection (TPS) for undocumented immigrants, ending a President Biden-era parole program that allowed migrants to work and live in the U.S. for two years if they have a financial sponsor, and beefing up security to secure the Mexican Border.
The Trump administration’s focus is to deport roughly 10 million undocumented immigrants but his latest proposal of using taxpayers’ funds to offer migrants $1,000 to self deport is an anomaly.
Trump, however, said they can legally reenter the U.S. while the government saves taxpayers funds and federal manpower.
The president is still pushing forward with his plan to deport American citizens who are convicted of violent crimes.
Trump said some countries including El Salvador welcomed his proposal and would incarcerate criminals from the U.S.
