WASHINGTON — The US Supreme Court on Wednesday favored California Democrats in the battle to control the US House of Representatives. Without any justices’ dissenting, the court permitted California to use a new voter-approved congressional map and rejected the contrary effort of state Republicans and the Trump administration.
The new map favors Democrats in their nationwide effort to respond to President Trump’s obsession to gerrymander the national electorate in favor of Republicans. Texas was the first state to follow the administration’s directive.
California adopted the new map in response to Texas Governor Abbott’s elimination of five congressional seats that had been held by Democrats. California’s new map creates five electoral districts that favor five Democrates.
The Supreme Court issued the brief order denying Republicans’ appeal without explanation, which is common on the court’s emergency docket.
