MIAMI – Miami-Dade County School Board member Dr. Steve Gallon III won a seat on the Miami-Dade County Commission by default.

Gallon was among five candidates who were elected unopposed.

They included County Commissioners Anthony Rodriguez, Juan Carlos Bermudez, Micky Steinberg and Natalie Millian who all won another four-year term in political office.

Gallon announced his resignation from the School Board when he filed papers to run for the District 1 seat.

Former County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert resigned with two years left in his term to run for U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson’s Congressional District 24 seat.

Wilson recently announced her retirement from Congress after serving eight terms.

Gallon said being elected the new county commissioner is a new chapter in his life.

“Serving as District 1’s School Board Member has been one of the greatest honors of my life—educating and serving children and the community has been my life,” Gallon said in a statement. “Together, we demonstrated what is possible when communities invest in children, support educators, and maintain high expectations for student success. While my service on the School Board is coming to an end, my commitment to the people of District 1 remains unchanged.”
