CARSON CITY, Nev. — Democratic Assemblyman Harvey Munford is once again introducing a measure that would require multicultural coursework for both students and teachers.

The Assembly Education Committee held a meeting Monday to review AB234. The bill would require cultural lessons for students in grades 2 through 12, including lessons on the contributions from men and women of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.

It would also require teachers take multicultural education classes as a condition of renewing their licenses.

Proponents say the measure would help students understand their own background and the diverse communities around them.

The bill offered few specifics on the curriculum, and lawmakers raised questions about the scope and content of the proposed program.

Munford said he introduced the bill this year after it failed to pass in three previous sessions.
